Europa League History
Originally called the UEFA Cup, the Europa League was founded in 1971-72, and had 64 teams from different European countries competing for the title. In the very first edition, Tottenham Hotspur emerged as the winners.
Over time, the competition has gone through several changes, including being renamed the UEFA Europa League in 1999. Now, it serves as a popular platform for teams that didn’t qualify for the Champions League, with 48 teams competing in both the group stage and knockout phase.
