3 Curiosities of Saint Patrick's Day that you did not know
A name with origins in the past
The man referred to by this name was Maewyn, a 4th century Celt who after pirate captivity converted to Christianity, beginning the evangelization of Ireland as his divine mission.
Maewyn changed his name to Patrick to be remembered as the person chosen by God to bring Christianity to the pagan lands of Ireland and among other things different milestones such as having expelled a plague of snakes from the island .
The symbology of the green clover
Going back to the origins of our protagonist, there are ancient writings that speak of how the saint used a three-leaf clover to explain a metaphor of the concept of the Christian trinity to the population of the island, symbolizing their unity.
Today the Irish use this symbol to represent and attract good luck.
Why is green used?
The color green, apart from being one of the official colors of the Irish flag, is used as a tribute to the symbol of the saint's green clover and to the green landscapes that symbolize the floral wealth that surrounds the island.
Ironically, the official color was light blue until at the end of the 18th century it was decided to change it to green to refer to the Irish independence movement.
